Set up the receipt printer on a computer
When you need this
- A desk computer prints receipts on a small receipt (thermal) printer for the first time, or it got a new printer.
- One Print should give more than one receipt: one for the patient or parent, one for the file.
- Receipts print, but the paper isn't cut between copies, or a long blank strip comes out between them.
These settings are kept on each computer. Set them up on every computer that prints receipts.
Steps
Choose how this computer prints
- In the menu, open Settings, then Printers. The page says These settings are for this computer only.
- Under How does this computer print receipts?, choose one:
- Print agent: a program installed on this computer prints the receipts. Under Printer name, type the printer's name as the computer shows it, or leave it blank to print to this computer's default printer.
- From the browser: nothing to install. Works in Chrome or Edge. Under The printer is connected by, choose USB or COM port, then press Pick printer and pick the receipt printer. On Windows, a USB printer is often held by its own driver and the browser can't use it. If the printer's driver gives it a COM port, choose COM port. For a COM port, also choose the printer's Speed (often 9600, or as its manual or self-test slip says). It only matters for a printer on a serial cable.
- Print dialog: nothing to install, and it works offline. Receipts go through the printer's own Windows or Mac driver, like any document. Use it when From the browser can't reach the printer. Then set up the printer once, as in Set up the printer for Print dialog below.
- Under Printer model, choose your printer. This sets how wide the receipt prints. If yours isn't listed, choose 80 mm – most receipt printers (or 58 mm – small printers for narrow paper).
- Under Copies of each receipt, choose how many receipts one Print gives (1 to 5).
- Press Save.
- Press Print a test receipt. The test receipt prints once, whatever Copies of each receipt says.
Set up the printer for Print dialog
Do this once on the computer, in the printer's own settings, not in the app. On Windows: Start › Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, choose the receipt printer, then Printing preferences. On a Mac: print any receipt, and look under Printer Features in the print window.
- Make the receipt printer this computer's default printer.
- Choose the roll paper size (80 mm, or 58 mm for a small printer).
- Set the paper cut to after each page. Printers name this differently: Paper Cut › Cut per page (Epson), Cut › Each page or Page cut (XPrinter and most other makes). Look under Advanced, Document Settings or Device Settings. Without this, the printer cuts only at the end of the job, so several copies come out as one long strip.
- If there's a cash drawer, set the printer to open it when printing. The drawer then opens for every receipt this computer prints, the test receipt too.
- To print without the print window every time, start Chrome with
--kiosk-printingadded to its shortcut: right-click the Chrome shortcut, Properties, and add--kiosk-printingat the end of Target, after the closing quote. Close every Chrome window and open it again from that shortcut.
What you should see
- Print a test receipt shows Test receipt sent to the printer, and a short receipt comes out.
- With more than one copy, one Print gives that many receipts, each cut off on its own. Only the first opens the cash drawer (with Print dialog, the drawer follows the printer's own setting).
If something goes wrong
- The copies come out joined, not cut apart (with Print dialog): the printer cuts only at the end of a job. Set its paper cut to after each page, as in step 3 of Set up the printer for Print dialog. With Print agent and From the browser, each copy is cut on its own.
- A long blank strip comes out between copies (with Print dialog): the paper size is a sheet, not a roll. Choose the roll paper size in the printer's preferences.
- The test receipt wasn't printed. Check the printer is on and has paper.: check the printer is on, has paper and its lid is shut, then try again.
- Couldn't reach the print agent on this computer. Check it's running.: start the print agent, or choose From the browser or Print dialog instead.
- This browser can't print to a receipt printer. Open the app in Chrome or Edge.: From the browser needs Chrome or Edge. Use one of them, or choose Print dialog.
- This computer's printer driver is using the receipt printer, so the browser can't print to it.: choose COM port if the printer came with a COM port driver, or choose Print dialog.
- 2 of 3 copies printed. The rest didn't print. (any numbers): the printer stopped partway, often out of paper. Fix the printer, then print the receipt again: it prints every copy again.
- The printer couldn't be picked.: check it's plugged in and on, then press Pick printer again.
- You can't change anything on the page: your role can't change printer settings. Ask your administrator.
